Burned by a Sunbeam Crock-Pot? – You May be Entitled to Compensation

When you buy a product and use it as intended, you don’t expect it to injure you; too often, though, products we assume are safe fail and cause major injuries or even death. Victims may be left with high medical bills and physical and mental pain and suffering, and be unable to work. In cases like these, when someone has been harmed by using products that should have been safe, a product liability attorney can fight for compensation for the damages the defective product caused.

An example of a defective product that has harmed consumers, is the Sunbeam Crock-Pot. On November 24, 2020, Sunbeam voluntarily recalled more than 900,000 Crock-Pot multi-cookers due to a potential burn hazard. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), “the recalled Crock-Pot multi-cooker can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked.” Sunbeam states that when this happens, it “can cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product.” Sunbeam has so far received 119 reports of the lids’ detaching, resulting in 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from first-degree to third-degree burns. If you’ve suffered burn injuries due to a defective product, consider consulting with an experienced Indianapolis burn injury lawyer to understand your rights and pursue compensation.

How Our Lawyers Can Help with a Sunbeam Crock-Pot Lawsuit

Manufacturers, distributors and sellers of products such as Sunbeam crock-pots are required to protect consumers from harmful or defective products, or they could be held liable for injuries or deaths that result. Indiana considers strict liability when it comes to product defects, so these parties can be held liable in a lawsuit for your injuries even if they were not negligent.

Product liability lawsuits are governed by the Indiana Defective Product Act (Indiana Code § 34-20-4.). Under the law, a product is defective when:

  • It has defects that a reasonable person using the product would not foresee
  • It presents an unreasonable danger to people when used as expected.

Consumer product claims can be complex, and the proficiency of your lawyers and the experts we work with is crucial in the investigation and litigation phases of your claim.

When you hire Stephenson Rife, we will get to work immediately on your behalf. We will investigate the circumstances of your case, gather evidence, utilize experts, negotiate with insurance companies and their lawyers, and take your case to court, if necessary, to get you the settlement you deserve.
