Motorcyclists Using Cell Phones???
Indiana saw the nation’s steepest spike in motorcycle-related deaths between 2016 and 2017. Early indications appear to point toward another increase in deaths among motorcyclists in the state. According to Will Wingfield of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, “That’s something we don’t want to see.”
Wingfield suggests that the increase in motorcycle deaths can be traced to an increase in the number of inexperienced drivers and an increase in drunk driving. But at least one industry insider believes distracted driving is another cause.
Incredible as it may seem, motorcyclists text while driving.
Texting While Motorcycling
Some things you just have to see for yourself. A Montreal man was photographed using his cell phone while driving down the highway. Some motorcyclists really do go down the road at highway speeds with their eyes on their phones instead of the road.
If that’s not enough for you, there’s even a rig available for people to mount their phones in front of them while they ride. It’s meant to be a setup for use with GPS, but it leaves the phone right in front of the exposed motorcyclists for their entire ride.
Numbers on texting while driving are hard to come by, and numbers on texting while motorcycling are almost impossible to find. This is because even if an accident is caused by texting while driving, unless police see the accident take place or video recording is available, there’s usually no evidence that the accident was caused by someone using their phone. But the fact remains that motorcyclists and other drivers get into accidents due to texting every day.
Solving the Problem
Michael Tockey, who owns Speed City Cycle in Indianapolis, believes distracted driving is one of the major causes of the spike in deaths among motorcyclists. He says, “If it were up to me, I would disable the text function on a phone while it’s in motion.”
While it’s hard to say how much of the recent increase in motorcyclist fatalities are due to texting while driving, it’s certain that this kind of reckless behavior causes at least a few accidents. Be smart. Don’t text while driving.
